Expand School Choice & Abolish Dept of Education

The American public education system is failing millions of children, particularly in low-income and minority communities. Despite spending more per pupil than nearly any other country, academic outcomes continue to decline. The federal Department of Education, created in 1979, has presided over decades of declining test scores, growing bureaucracy, and the politicization of education. Meanwhile, families who want better options for their children are trapped in failing schools by zip code. The education establishment prioritizes the interests of unions and bureaucrats over the needs of students. School choice programs — ESAs, vouchers, and charter schools — have proven track records of improving outcomes, particularly for disadvantaged students, yet they are ferociously opposed by those who benefit from the status quo.

“We the People demand the dramatic expansion of school choice through universal Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), school vouchers, and charter school expansion. Education funding should follow the child, not the institution. We further call for the abolition of the federal Department of Education, returning education authority to states, local communities, and most importantly, to parents. Competition and choice will drive the excellence that decades of federal bureaucracy have failed to deliver.”
